On Tuesday afternoon, 911 call lines went down throughout the US state of Massachusetts. Over an hour later, state officials announced that coverage was back to normal.

At about 1830 UTC, residents were notified of the outage by a cell phone alert.

911 is an emergency telephone number used in the United States and other countries. Callers are connected to a local dispatcher who can send law enforcement, the fire department, or an ambulance depending on the nature of the emergency.

Michelle Wu, mayor of Boston, the state capital, recommended use of local police, fire, and medical numbers rather than the disabled 911. Public fire alarm call points also remained functional throughout the incident.
