On March 8, a student of Columbia University was arrested for participating in pro-Palestine protests. Mahmoud Khalil, 30 years old, was previously identified as a major leader in the Columbia encampment protesting the university’s financial stake in companies that do business with the Israeli military. In the lead up to his arrest, Zionist activists reported him to federal officials, which is believed to have played a major role in his detainment. Despite being arrested, Khalil has not been charged with a crime. While White House officials have accused Khalil of being a supporter of Hamas, there’s no evidence that he’s ever been affiliated with them. Additionally, it’s been pointed out that even if he was vocally supportive of Hamas, this is protected speech under the first amendment and can not be used to revoke a person’s green card. Several pro-Palestinian and human rights organizations have denounced the detainment of Khalil as being unconstitutional and his deportation was temporarily blocked by a judge on March 10.
