The Arakan Army are calling the people of Maungdaw town, in Rakhine State of western Myanmar, to evacuate, starting at 9 PM on June 16. The Arakan Army has taken control of 17 towns in Rakhine State since November 2023. The army is fighting against military junta that took control of Myanmar in 2021 coup.

There are approximately 70 thousand Rohingya people in Maungdaw, who have escaped acts of violence in nearby town of Buthidaung. Two exit routes from Maungdaw are controlled by the Arakan Army. The remaining route leads to Bangladesh, to which thousands of Rohingya escaped to in May. However, Bangladeshian foreign ministry has stated that they would not allow any more Rohingya refugees.
