On June 23, in the Republic of Dagestan, 20 people were killed and 46 injured when gunmen opened fire on two orthodox churchs, two synagogues and a police station. The attacks were separate and happened in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala. The attackers used automatic weapons and escaped by a car. A counter-terrorism operation resulted in deaths of six attackers and by the morning of June 24, Anti-Terrorism Committee reported the operation to be over.

Three months ago, 145 people were killed in Moscow by the terrorist group Islamic State. No party has claimed responsibility for the Dagestan attack, but the governor Sergey Melikov said that authorities knew who were behind the attacks, and that they were related to war in Ukraine.

Among the attackers were close relatives of Magomed Omarov, a head of Dagestan’s Sergokala central district, and a member of United Russia political party. Omarov was arrested and expelled from United Russia.
