The brazilian businessman and TV host Silvio Santos passed away at the age of 93 today at the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo, due to complications from pneumonia caused by an influenza (H1N1) infection. Silvio Santos, born Senor Abravanel, was a towering figure in Brazilian television, best known for hosting the “Programa Silvio Santos” since 1963 and for founding the Brazilian Television System (SBT) in 1981.

On July 18, 2024, Silvio was admitted to Albert Einstein Hospital to treat the H1N1 infection and was discharged two days later. However, on August 1st, he was hospitalized again for further medical tests, according to SBT’s press office. His passing marks the end of an era in Brazilian television.
