On Saturday, Hankede Bridge was opened to the public at midnight. The bridge was opened amid to delays after construction was finished. The bridge is 1.4 km long and connects Maradhoo and Gaukedi.
Construction was handed to Afcons Infrastructure in 2021 and finished in 2024, where it was handed over to the Maldivian government by India’s Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar.
Initially. the government announced the bridge to be opened in July, but was later postponed to September. After Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar urged the Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure to take responsibility and open the bridge, it was officially opened.
