As the Republican Kristi Noem left the office as Governor of South Dakota to take office as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security after President Trump appointed her to the position and the Senate confirmed her as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, the Republican Larry Rhoden has taken office as Governor of South Dakota.

As he took office Larry Rhoden had his family present at the ceremony with the South Dakota Supreme Court Justice Steven Jensen swearing him in at Sioux Falls. Kristi Noem was the 33rd Governor and thus Larry Rhoden took office as the 34th Governor of South Dakota.

Larry Rhoden has previously served as Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota to Kristi Noem. He got sworn in without winning an election which is remarkable as it’s a rare event in the history of South Dakota with a large majority of governors having won a gubernatorial election in South Dakota to become the governor.

Plans for the succession was reportedly in the works ever since President Trump announces his nomination of Kristi Noem as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security according to Keloland Media Group.
