On Tuesday, the ruling Progressive Labour Party (PLP) won the general election in Bermuda.
David Burt, who has served as Premier of Bermuda since 2017, led the his party to its third consecutive victory. The party won 12,300 votes, nearly half of all votes cast, and won 25 of the 36 constituencies.
The main opposition party One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) performed well gaining five seats. Their leader Jarion Richardson conceded defeat and said “democracy is about choice, and Bermudians have made theirs”.
The other party the Free Democratic Movement (FDM), failed to win any seat as did none of the 26 independent candidates one of which was the former premier Sir John Swan.
The voter turnout was historically low. Fewer people came out to vote than in the previous election which was held during the COVID-19 pandemic.
