On the 26th of February 2025 Sir Kier Starmer met with US President Donald Trump at the White House, in order to discuss the conflict in Ukraine, the special relationship between the UK and USA, and a second visit to the UK.
The talks concluded on the 27th of February. According to Trump “We like each other frankly, and we like each other’s country.”
On the subject of the conflict in Ukraine little progress has been made between the two leaders, however it is widely considered by those in positions of power in the UK that there is little to no chance of US armed forces being deployed to Ukraine.
During the talks it came to light that tariffs may not be lobbied against the UK if a trade deal is arranged between the UK and USA, according to Trump if a “real deal” was established then “tariffs may not be necessary”. This would be useful for the UK as it may strengthen economic ties between the two nations, increase investment in the UK and USA and allow for the UK to be more globally competitive (especially after Brexit).
During the talks Trump also retracted his claims that the president of Ukraine Vlodymyr Zelenskyy was a “dictator” saying “I don’t believe I said that”, before saying that the two “got along”.
At the meeting an offer was also put forward by King Charles’s III for Trump to Visit the UK, Trump remarked that it would be an “honour” to visit the UK, and also remarked that King Charles was a “beautiful man”
